Travelogue – Travel begins

Brother, Niece, and I left his Munich apartment by 11:00 this morning for two weeks of travel. We were at the main train station in plenty of time for our 11:47 train. It was late, by about 15 minutes. By the time we got to Stuttgart we were only 7 minutes late, not a big deal with what should have been a 35 minute layover. But the train out of Stuttgart was also late. Though it was traveling 250 km/h (150 m/h) at times we got into Strasbourgh 50 minutes behind schedule.

No big deal. But enough of pokey transportation. We checked into the hotel and set off on foot to see central Strasbourg, or at least a bit of it. We walked around the Petit France district. We wondered why there were four channels to the river. We saw signs saying that's because it allowed for four water mills. What used to be the industrial center is now the tourist zone.

We had a pleasant supper in an outdoor restaurant. The area specialty is (I think) “tart flambe.” I thought it might be a sort of tart that is set aflame at the table. Alas, no. It is more like a pizza without the tomato sauce. Brother and Niece each had one. I had chicken cordon bleu, which was way too big for one person (at least if that one person is me) and didn't have enough savory sauce.

Niece decided that was enough for the day. Brother and I wandered around the central island until after the sun set. We'll see more of it tomorrow.
