Coming to the victim's defense

A couple days ago I wrote:

"But gays are the last minority that society still permits bashing."

My niece responded with:

There are so many groups out there that society is still willing to bash! When this battle is won, there will always be others. :-/

As we've seen with the recent Shirley Sherrod mess, when someone makes racist remarks a lot of people in society are willing and eager to point out how wrong it is. That is true for all other minorities (those challenged by weight, for example). It doesn't yet consistently happen for gay people.

Yes, for a long time to come there will be people who will bash others who are not like them. We as a society are getting pretty good at coming to the victim's defense. I trust that will soon happen on behalf of gay people too.
